Summer Fun in CocoaThe City of Cocoa , FL is an undiscovered jewel on the Space Coast of Florida.  The small city of Cocoa , Florida (not Cocoa Beach) is away from all the hubbub of the more well known tourist spots with all the same rewards. The charming and picturesque historic Cocoa Village is just waiting for you to discover its many delights including its historical buildings and the types of shops you love to "poke around in".

Cocoa , FL fronts on four miles of the beautiful Indian River lagoon, east of Orlando near Lake Poinsett in Brevard County and
is part of the Palm Bay-Melbourne metro area.  An 8-mile causeway leads from the city over the Indian River to Merritt Island, FL, Cocoa Beach,  Florida and the Cape Canaveral space-launch complex.

Cocoa's land area is 8.3 square miles.  Because of its central location in the County, it has developed a wide-range of housing, commercial, industrial and institutional development.  The  City of Cocoa, Florida is serviced by the Orlando International Airport and three regional airports under the Titusville-Cocoa Air Authority and the Space Coast Area Transit System.  Hospitals are just a few minutes away in nearby Rockledge,  FL, Cocoa Beach, Florida and Titusville, FL.  Main access to the city is gained by Interstate 95 or U.S. Highway 1 and State Road 520.

Cocoa Real Estate

The City of Cocoa, Florida has a population of nearly 17,000 people who enjoy its great year-round climate.  The mild winter temperatures average in the 60's and the comfortable summers are in the 80 degree range. The city is culturally diverse with a younger population unlike many of Florida's communities.   Cocoa's largest age group is between 20 and 40 years old.

The City of Cocoa's aim is to be one of the most livable cities in Florida giving its residents a quality lifestyle on all levels.  The city is focusing on providing community services at the highest level possible and developing more cultural activities.  In keeping with that focus the city has recently (2003) revamped its Police Department which is committed to providing the citizens with excellence in modern law enforcement.  The department works 24/7 to provide the community with preventive, proactive and reactive policing programs.  The Cocoa Fire Department provides 24-hour emergency service with enhanced basic life support medical response and fire support  operations.  The dedicated men and women of the Police and Fire Departments of the City of Cocoa are well trained professionals who stand ready to promote, protect and improve the safety and welfare of the community.

Cocoa Schools

Cocoa SchoolThe educational needs of the community's children are met by the Brevard County Public Schools with eight elementary schools (K-6), two middle schools (7-8), one traditional high school (9-12) and one Jr./Sr. high school (7-12).   Two of  the districts five Magnet Schools are located in Cocoa:  Cambridge Elementary School of Arts & Sciences and Endeavour Elementary School of Science Integrated Integrated Technology.  For those who prefer an alternative to public education there are several private schools, elementary and secondary, in Cocoa and nearby communities.

The City of Cocoa is home to the Brevard Community College - Cocoa Campus and the University of Central Florida - Cocoa Campus.  There are seven colleges or universities within 50 miles of Cocoa with the closest being Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne (22 mi).

The city is a vibrant community with a rich heritage and history.  Cocoa, Florida was founded by fishermen and settled around 1860.  The town site was laid out under the name of "Indian River City" in 1881.  The name was denied by the U.S. Postal Service as being too long so it became Cocoa.  One tradition says the town was named for the coco-palm while another says it was named for the famed Baker's Cocoa. 

Historic Cocoa VillageThe gem of the city is where it all began, the charming historical Cocoa Village.  The Village is a Victorian delight that sits on the west bank of the scenic Indian River in old restored downtown.  As you walk the tree-lined streets you will discover mural-ed walls, benches with stone figures, historical homes and buildings (registered with the National Historic Register).  You can explore antique stores or sip a cup of coffee in a Victorian style coffee house.  There are specialty shops, boutiques and art galleries amid cafes establishments entertainment Establishments.  Local musical groups will entertain you in the quaint Gazebo in the square on Brevard Avenue. The restored Cocoa Village Playhouse was built in 1924 as the Aladdin Theatre,  in 1940's it was the State Theatre (owned  Studios Paramount Studios), today its hosts many plays and musicals.  Cocoa Village hosts several special events including a Mardi Gras, Fine Art and Craft shows, and holiday celebrations.

Visitors can do everything that they would do in the big resorts without the crowds.  Kick back and enjoy the view, read a book, do nothing at all or do it all! 

Water sports in CocoaCocoa, FL offers all the water-sports found in the large coastal tourist spots:  swimming, fishing (salt water or fresh), kayaking, sailing, sailboarding, parasailing, waterskiing with the added bonus:  a ride down the river on an old-fashioned riverboat.  Take a tour or hire a charter or go horseback riding through scenic wooded trails or along the shore.  There are nature trails and wildlife preserves throughout the county.

The history buff will have a great visit at the Alma Clyde Field Library of Florida History and exploring the many historical buildings.  For those who enjoy the more cultural side of life there is the Brevard Museum of History and Science, the Cocoa Village Playhouse or the science buff can visit the Astronaut Memorial Planetarium or the Florida Solar Energy Center.

You can venture out of the city and enjoy the Brevard Zoo, Cape Canaveral Lighthouse,  the Kennedy Space Center, Disney World and Sea World, attend a Brevard County Manatee game or enjoy many other attractions all within a short distance by car.

Which ever you chose:  to do it all, just a little or nothing, Cocoa is the place to do it in leisure and style.
