The city is a vibrant community with a rich heritage and history. Cocoa, Florida was founded by fishermen and settled around 1860. The town site was laid out under the name of "Indian River City" in 1881. The name was denied by the U.S. Postal Service as being too long so it became Cocoa. One tradition says the town was named for the coco-palm while another says it was named for the famed Baker's Cocoa.
 The gem of the city is where it all began, the charming historical Cocoa Village. The Village is a Victorian delight that sits on the west bank of the scenic Indian River in old restored downtown. Cocoa Village hosts several special events including a Mardi Gras, Fine Art and Craft shows, and holiday celebrations.
