Diane Shattuck Broker CRS, GRI, SRES, ABR, e-PRO Rockledge FL Real Estate Agent diane@homesinbrevardcounty.com (321) 258-2608 | Every city has its beginning and Melbourne, FL is no different. This city was originally founded by freed slaves in the 1860s. The city was named after the postmasters home city. This was done in error because the postmaster originally came from New Zealand. During the Civil War this area (which was not Melbourne yet) was used as a training center for Confederate Soldiers. A few soldiers returned to South Brevard to buy land for 5 cents an acre. When the war was over these soldiers returned with their pioneering families to settle in Melbourne, Florida creating a new city.
Schooling in Melbourne, Florida did not start until 1883 when the first school was built. The school was created on land which is now part of the Florida Technical Institute campus. The Melbourne Naval Air Station was created in 1883 to train pilots for World War II. This program of training Navy and Marine pilots ran until 1946. Today this land is now part of the Melbourne International Airport. In 1969 two cities merged, Eau Gallie and Melbourne, Florida to create the new city of Melbourne, FL and as they say the rest is history. Over the years the population of Melbourne, FL has grown to 16,959,416 as of the 2003 per the Census Bureau.
