Merritt Island, FL
is a unique natural area that emerged from the sea over one million years ago.  It is a barrier island that has protected 25 miles of Floridas East Coast from wind and wave action.  In 1963, a man named Allan Cruickshank, who was an avid bird watcher and took pictures of the wildlife around Merritt Island, had a wild dream...  Allans dream was to establish a protected area around the NASA Space Center to preserve the habitat of the unique bird and animal population of Merritt Island. Having this preserve coexist with the NASA Space Center and not interfere with the directive of President Kennedy to put a man on the moon was no small undertaking.  In less than a year, his goal was achieved.  An arrangement was made between NASA and the U S Fish and Wildlife Service to create the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.  Alan Cruickshank had realized his dream and 2500 acres of Merritt Island land was set aside for the refuge

The open water of the refuge now provides a habitat for 23 species of migratory waterfowl and a year round home for great blue herons, great egrets, wood storks, cormorants, brown pelicans, white pelicans and other shore birds.  The marsh on the Refuge is home to snails, crabs, worms, clams and fish thereby attracting larger birds, raptors, and alligators.  Approximately 1500 acres of the refuge was set aside as an active citrus grove.  These groves are an integral part of the Merritt Island, Florida heritage and an important part of the Indian River fruit industry.
