A GREAT MONTH FOR FLYING

The city of Cape Canaveral, Florida, which is located in the northern section of Brevard County, Florida, will be the site of a rare event.  In October, 2008, NASA will place two shuttles on launch pads at the same time.  This infrequent experience has only happened 16 times in the past years.

Shuttle Endeavour will be moved to launch pad 39A and prepared to launch on a mission to repair the Hubble Telescope.  There will be seven astronauts aboard the shuttle to complete this vital mission.   However, this is a dangerous mission because the Endeavor will be far away from the Space Station and should an emergency occur, they could not make it back to earth.

Enter the shuttle Atlantis.  The Atlantis will be moved to launch pad 39B at the same time as Endeavor in case it is needed to rescue the Endeavor crew.  Four astronauts will be standing by ready to launch into space if needed. 

Work in space is always dangerous.  However, when they are repairing the Hubble Telescope, Endeavor and her crew will not have the backup that has been available during other missions.  In case something unexpected happens and they need help, the Atlantis crew is ready and prepared to launch.  After liftoff the Atlantis crew will rendezvous with the Endeavor.    Flying in formation, Atlantis will open the payload door allowing the Endeavor astronauts to space walk to Atlantis for their trip back to earth.
